Hydrogen is considered as one of the best alternative fuels for internal combustion engines due to unique combustion properties. In place of conventional fuels, there is a need to search an alternative fuel as the reserves of conventional fuels are decreasing due to increase in consumption. In this paper, the review with respect to the performance of diesel engine and emission analysis while using biodiesel has been presented. The literature on extensive research demonstrates that it can be used pure or in blends with conventional diesel fuel in diesel engines without modification in design but still in actual practice, the use of biodiesel is limited. Biodiesel is defined as a trans-esterified methyl ester renewable fuel derived from vegetable oils or animal fats with properties similar or better than diesel fuel. Therefore, the study on biodiesel as fuel for CI engine was undertaken. In a country like India, availability of edible oils are is partially dependent on import, it would be not be possible to use edible oil in CI engines. The present situation of energy crises due to continuous depletion of frighten ancient fuels has resulted in rise of global prices of crude petroleum products which is bound to affect adversely on the overall economy of many countries like India. It is derived from oils and fats by transesterification with alcohols. Biodiesel is an increased attended word as an alternative, in-noxious, ecological an sustainable, fuel.
